The Story

A creeping broad-leaved variety with long trailing branches, rooting where they touch the ground. It is cultivated for its aromatic carpet-like growth, suitable for rock gardens, between paving stones or cobbles, and for a ground cover, perfuming the air when trodden upon. Its stems rise only 10cm high and are topped through summer with rose pink flowers.

Wild Thyme makes for a wonderful fragrant lawn, emitting a pleasant herbal scent when crushed underfoot. Its tiny leaves and delicate flowers create a carpet-like effect, perfect for adding a touch of natural beauty to your outdoor space. Good to xeriscape low to moderate foot traffic areas due to its tolerance for low water and poor soils.

To establish as a dense groundcover it is best sown in trays and transplanted out as a seedling when they reach 2-4 true leaf stage. Space at up to 20 plants or clumps per square metre. May take 1-2 years to establish as a lawn.

Maintain height and shape by regular clipping using a hedge trimmer, weed eater or lawn mower. When cut like grass it gives off a delightful fragrance.

Also known as creeping thyme, elfin thyme, Breckland thyme.

Surface Sow: Requires light to germinate. Scatter seed on the surface. Press seed down into the soil.  Keep moist.
