The Story

Perilla Purple, also known as Korean sesame leaf (not to be confused with Shiso, a different variety of Perilla), is very popular in salads for its vibrant colour and mild liquorice/minty/cinnamon flavour. Pinch out flowers as they develop to encourage foliage on bushier plants. Plants are frost tender.

Sowing Perilla
Stratify the seeds before sowing to break seed dormancy and encourage germination. To stratify, chill the seeds in the fridge for 2-3 weeks before sowing. Ensure the seed packet is unopened or the seed is in an airtight container, as certain fruits and vegetables in the fridge that omit ethylene can impact the germination of seed.

Perilla needs light to germinate. Surface sow seeds by placing the seeds on the surface and gently pressing the seeds down into the soil. Sow once temperatures remain mild and keep seeds moist during early sprouting stages.

Caring for Perilla
Keep Perilla in sheltered sunny positions to promote strong leaf colour and flavour development. Regularly harvest Perilla to encourage fresh foliage production while limiting flowering. Frost-free conditions are essential throughout the growing period.

Uses for Perilla
Fresh Perilla leaves add colour and flavour to salads, wraps and garnishes. Asian cuisines commonly use foliage from the Perilla plant for pickling rice dishes or accompaniments. Perilla can be used in home garden kitchens for a range of uses.
