The Story

Also known as luffa gourd or vegetable sponge. Regarded as an Asian delicacy when harvested as a young fruit, but also suitable for growing to maturity and drying for bathroom sponges.

A vining plant that can grow to a reasonable length, it is best grown with support such as up a strong string, wire or trellis. Fruits will produce a better shape if the plant is trained up a frame. Pinch out the growing point (head) of plants when trailing vines reach 150cm to promote fruiting and keep a more manageable, compact plant habit.

To harvest your own bathroom sponges, leave mature fruits in a dry place with the ends cut off and the seeds extracted. The flesh will now wither, leaving the familiar network of cylindrical fibre.

Sowing Gourd Luffa
Use the transplant method to sow seeds after soaking for 2-4 hours, once temperatures remain consistently warm. Begin in trays with free-draining soil and place in full sun positions to support early growth. Maintain moisture during germination while avoiding waterlogged conditions. Once seedlings are well-established and have two sets of true leaves, transfer them into their final growing position in the garden or greenhouse.

Caring for Gourd Luffa
Providing strong support structures is essential for gourd luffa, as its vines are vigorous and can grow very long. Proper support also helps to improve fruit shape. Regular watering is also essential to support fruiting during the summer months. Pinching back growth can help to manage plant size and encourage fruit development.

Uses of Gourd Luffa
Young gourd luffa fruit can be used for cooking purposes in stir-fries, soups and curries. Fully matured gourds dry into natural sponges for household and bathroom use. Gardeners often grow luffa for combined culinary and practical harvesting.
