In the first season, sow a seedling bed and allow the crowns to develop for a full year. In autumn, leave the ferns that grow to die back naturally. Lift the crowns and space. For best results leave another season before picking or only moderately cut spears.
To achieve crowns that last up to 15 years you need to tranplant crowns into soil that has excellent drainage such as a more sandy or stony soil and in a sunny position. Provide an annual side dressing of nutrient-rich mulch.
Cull any crowns/plants that don't perform well as good plants can produce for 10-15 years.
Caution: The berries of this plant are mildly poisonous. Exercise caution around children and pets.
